Fleadh File 2 - Munster Fleadh 25 days To Go

June 2012

Welcome to the weekly update on the Munster Fleadh Cheoil happenings. Here you will find the latest news, gossip and information about the Munster Fleadh Cheoil. With 25 days to go....

We have been busy finalising the details of the Fleadh Live Sessions Trail. This event involves 14 local pubs who will host the nightly sessions which run from Monday 16th through to Sunday 22nd The impressive names on the list of Musicians involved in the Live Sessions is breath-taking, and this is the point where I wish I had several more bodies and could be in 14 places at the one time! We will issue further details about these sessions soon, but I guarantee you will be spoilt for choice!

Our Fleadh Comórtas Ealaine (School poster competition) has now closed and Olive and Áine would like to thank all the local schools and pupils who got involved in the competition, and tell me that they were delighted with the standard of work submitted. Tá fíor moladh agus buíochas againn do na múinteoirí a spreag agus a chabhraigh le na daltaí na smaointe a léiriú chomh foirfe sin. Primary classes illustrated a seanfhocal, while secondary pupils designed a poster on the theme of the Fleadh. Winners will be presented with their prizes during the School Choirs event at 2pm on Fleadh Monday 16th in the Park Hotel. All entries will be on display in the town during Fleadh Cheoil week. We would encourage everybody to go and check them out!

Plans are also well underway for the production of the summer Seisiún Show in the Park Hotel with Cúil Cheoil. The opening night of this year's Seisiún takes place on Fleadh Tuesday 17th, and will I hear, have a hint of an Australian flavour - in honour of the visit of the Australian Ambassador to Ireland on the following day to officially open the Connery's Commemorative garden in Bohadoon - another Fleadh event!

Members of Raw Bar Collective need no introduction to followers of Trad, with Dave Sheridan, Conal Ó Gráda and Colm Murphy very active on the Irish trad scene. Working on the premise that listening to good traditional music is not a passive occupation, the lads promise a lively night of teasing tunes that will have your feet tapping uncontrollably. North Cregg have enjoyed a large and loyal following since they first started playing in Cork's vibrant session scene in the mid-nineties. Rooted in the vibrant traditional music of Sliabh Luachra, but happy to embrace worldwide influences, the end result is a fabulously strong trad-swing sound. Performing on the first night of the Fleadh, the North Cregg concert provides a tasty tempter of what lies ahead for the trad lover during the rest of the week. You can catch North Cregg in the Park Hotel on Sunday 15th July at 8.30pm. Tickets €10.
